Why these meetings?
We want to collect ideas and we don’t need to “teach” anything to anybody, we think we can join together our strengths from different perspectives. As you can read in our Mission our goal is to facilitate the interaction between the world of culture and the world of institutions, citizens and companies in order to create awareness on sustainability.
These virtual meetings, very short just for a tea with friends, will begin on April 18 at 17.00. You can follow them in streaming or watch the recording that we will share online.

I am taking inspiration from recent events in order to talk about Venice, the Venetian lagoon and sustainable tourism.
In recent months there has been a lot of talk about Venice, high water (high tide correctly) and lagoon. The extent of the last high water made more evident than ever how a great and dangerous change is taking place. Taking into account sustainability is now something we owe to the environment. And to Venice as well.
Well, I am not an expert and I do not want to talk about things I do not know. What I want is to reassure all friends, especially foreigners: no, there is no risk of drowning. Unless you swim in the canal, or jump off a bridge, but this goes under the name of imbecility. At most, if you like walking barefoot in the high water you could meet a pantegana (big, big rat) and get the “samoro nero” (distemper) otherwise it’s all right, you can continue to visit Venice. I am joking… but this is to highlight some tourists’ bad behaviours . A little more respect would be really appreciated. Ok, I am a bit mean but we all have – as human beings – our faults towards Venice and towards the planet.
Once again I need to start from the high water and from all the controversies that have arisen for the fundraising launched by an Italian TV. The perception is “in Venice they are all rich”. I do not have any evidence of that and, just to make it clear “Venice is a world heritage site” that’s it. The funding went to Pellestrina, which is a part of Venice, but certainly it is not in the historic center. There is a whole world that lies outside the well known tourist destinations. A beautiful and (almost …) uncontaminated world, a natural environment that must be enhanced and visited, always with a great respect . We need to preserve it.
This is just the prelude for telling a story of a different environment, with its own poetry. An environment that in my opinion gives its best in the winter period when, with a clear sky, the mountains embrace the sea. Today we will visit a small part of the Venetian lagoon which is part of the Cavallino Treporti tourist park
Lio Piccolo
Only a few people are here in winter. It is a bit difficult to find a restaurant where to eat, but the scenery is absolutely amazing and you can settle for a sandwich. So here we are to discover Lio Piccolo
Lio Piccolo a village in the lagoon, thus reads the tourist information sign. It is actually a tiny little village. Some houses, Palazzo Boldù, the Church of Santa Maria della Neve, the bell tower. Picturesque, but its main strength is the landscape of the lagoon, the labyrinth of canals and the quiet reigning everywhere
Thanks to this peace, pink flamingos have returned – or maybe they have just arrived, I don’t know-. Flamingos are not the only species living there. In the whole area there are a lot of birds, we saw many egrets and herons. We were able to see flamingos only from a distance. It was too late to attempt to get closer as the sun was going down. We will try again.
And it is precisely at sunset that the colors become spectacular. It’s a triumph of light and shadow, the red of the sky reflected on the water, a fishing net that is “in the shadow of the last sun”
The lagoon and sustainability
Isn’t it worth moving a bit from Venice to admire what surrounds it? Venice without the lagoon would not exist. The lagoon is a complex system that must be preserved, enhanced and people must be aware of it. And above all they must respect it. High water, indeed granda as the one in November, is only one of the problems that made the world discover how fragile Venice is. But there are other too. Just as an example: the increase of the water temperature of the lagoon and the consequent change in fish fauna. Climate change, climate crisis are issues that we have already discussed in Q11 but it is worth mentioning them again.
As an association we like to let people know about our territory and the Italian territory in general . We strongly believe in sustainable tourism. A slow tourism that moves on foot or by bicycle. And these areas of the lagoon are more than suitable – we expect (only) people to be respectful. We don’t ask for much. So let’s take a walk in Venice and Venetian lagoon. Enjoy your walk! Sustainability and a flower in All you need is a flower -100 hours for the environment. In more than 100 hours of events we have tried to answer and ask questions about a sustainable world.
Sustainability, a term that embraces concepts that are difficult to summarize if not by using the 17 goals of theUN Agenda for Sustainable Development. Even keeping the Agenda as a “compass” it is still difficult to give the full meaning of the five days of speeches held last June. In order to make your reading easier we have decided to give the structure of Air, Land and Water to Quaderno 11. We really hope that you can enjoy the complexity of what has been discussed.
Air
Three articles dealing with the air element. The destructive air of the Vaia storm – by Thierry Robert Luciani -, the extremely polluted air of fine dust – by Salvatore Patti – and finally the “in the air” cultivation of vertical farms (greenhouses) – by Sergio Martin.
Land
Land, the largest section of articles. Six pieces that intersect visions, sensitivities and different but complementary approaches to each other. The section starts with a piece dealing with nutrition, intensive farming and the musical evenings related with ” All you need is a flower” – by Stefano Pesce.
We then move on to two more pieces that focus on the area of Mestre – Venezia and Marghera. They will lead us to “visit” businesses and the sustainability of production processes – by Gabriella Chiellino – and on how to reach the sustainability of a community and a territory – by Gruppo di lavoroPiave .
The last three articles will focus on different projects. The first one on how to “clean the world” – by Ermes Tuon, the second on how to develop sustainable tourism by using digital tools – by Antonella Grana– and finally how to re-use the Veneto area which is deeply affected by overbuilding – by Federico Della Puppa.
Water
Water, the third and last section with three articles. The Venice lagoon and the types of fish living (and used to live) there. The effects of climate change can be seen on the fish population – by Riccardo Fiorin. We then go back to Mestre with the dream / need for a green area: the Marzenego park – by Carla Dalla Costa. And finally a piece that tells ua a story of art coming from rivers and the sea – by Barbara Cremaschi
Sustainability and a flower. Can a flower be enough? Can anything be done? This was the very first question. Yes even if “it’s already late”. Some people still deny the existance of a problem. They do not want to see the problem / problems caused by human activities
Yet we can all do something big or small based on our sensitivity and ability. The point is: do we want to make a change? …
100 hours for Environment, the event that took place from 5 to 9 June, whose full title was “All you need is a flower – 100 hours for environment” “Ci vuole un fiore – 100 ore per l’ambiente”. The entire event, 5 days, was included in ASVIS Festival Program, the annual Sustainable Development Festival the greatest event in Italy dedicated to the 2030 Agenda

The small, delicate blue flowers are in front of a devastated area in Italy. We will not show the devastation, we will not specify the place, what is enough to know is that “ All you need a flower”
We have collected most of the speeches of the 5 days event, which took place at Negozio Piave 67 , in a short video, just a few minutes. In a couple of months we will have a publication. What is important, and that has emerged with the power of the speeches, are the results of climate change. For the environment but above all for humanity “we are running out of time”. “We must change our way of thinking” and consequently the way we act
But … can a flower be enough to start over? No, it is not enough. Not at all, it is in any case hope from which to start again. Hope that needs to be supported with concrete actions, as we have clearly understood in June.

The (tiring) rise is the term that has immediately come up when we have seen the photos sphere. And it is also the term that defines the long and sometimes tiring way of Progetto Re-Cycle better than others. We did not stop and a few days ago we became an APS – Associazione di Promozione Sociale – which will allow us to carry out ongoing projects (and new ones coming) more incisively.
Our story is not straightforward, quite the opposite. We started as a scientific online magazine in 2015, then we added the association – end of 2016 – and now this additional step. One thing is certain: change does not scare us
It wasn’t easy to define what Progetto Re-Cycle is, to find our identity – even if we prefer soul – and how it is evolving. Joining together culture and economic processes, association, society and business for someone is probably still puzzling. However, we have found our peers and also a great compass: the UN 2030 Agenda for sustainable development. We have some very similar goals
Follow us and, why not, support us, our old projects and those that will come. In the end it’s not just OUR projects but YOURS too! Even if it is a (tiring) rise… maybe… in the meantime keep watching some “unusual” mapping
The Butterfly effect, when small actions can contribute generating great changes
In a tiny little village (no it is not the village of An early Christmas Carol), up on the green hills in Friuli Venezia Giulia, there were (and still there are) many – but really many ,many, butterflies.
You can see butterflies everywhere, on the wall of the houses, in the streets and in their own house. The butterfly house is so big, three big apartments with trees, plants, water (it is a bit humid in there) and butterflies flying everywhere or resting on some flowers. Before arriving in their apartments the butterflies travelled for a long time, they crossed the Ocean but they were babies and they can’t remember their long journey. They know only the tiny little village on the green hills and they are happy like that.

obvious to describe the three greenhouses and the butterflies and I have chosen
to begin with a short story to tell the real beautiful story of “La Casa delle
Farfalle” in Bordano.
“The House of Butterflies” was established in 2003, it is an eco-museum and is the largest in Italy. The three greenhouses host three different eco systems the African jungle, the Asian and Australian rainforests, and the Amazon. The most peculiar aspect I have discovered when visiting “la Casa” is the project “The Bosque Nuevo”. Bosque Nuevo is a butterfly farm located in Costa Rica. Their project is innovative: by selling “baby butterflies” (pupae) they aim to buy cultivated land and to re-convert it into native forest.
The butterfly farms have created an alternative economy, replacing when possible cattle-breeding or cultivation that are among the causes of forest destruction.
The little town of Bordano
The little town of Bordano has its own story and it connects past events and this new approach to economy. Bordano was affected by an earthquake in 1976. It was almost completely rebuilt by 1983, now there are around 700 people living there. Butterflies are an important presence thanks to a very special microclimate
In 1996 the
Regione Friuli Venezia Giulia started a project, which included street art for
the artistic-cultural and naturalistic
enhancement of the place. And… its focus was… guess what… butterflies!
It really seems that the Butterfly Effect has come true. The flapping of the wings of a butterfly has generated very large effects from one side of the ocean to the other

All you need is a flower – 100 hours for the environment.
This is the title of the event developed thanks to the “stubbornness” of Movimento Caparbia, and a bit of our stubbornness too- , a really “big” event that brings together conferences, music, culture and recreational activities.
It will take place from June 5 to June 9 in the area of “terraferma” which is not far from Venice: Marghera and Mestre
The events of last October and November, which brought considerable damage to the Venetian forest heritage, to the heart of Venice, to the coasts – and affected many other areas of our territory – have greatly affected us. They have added greater evidence to what we have already under our eyes for several years.
Climate change, air pollution, in particular the area of the Po valley, the accumulation of waste, the depletion of natural resources, the melting of glaciers, the summer drought are some of the many alarm bells for the state of the environment.
We have decided to do something and have therefore brought together the forces of Progetto Re-Cycle and Movimento Caparbia. In a short time we have managed to organize this awareness-raising event. “All you need is a flower – 100 hours for the environment –
Take a walk with us for re-designing environment and work in Venezia. This is the subject of our new Quaderno, Q10.
We will take you in the hidden parts of this amazing city. You will visit the most beautiful parts with small and secret “botteghe” – workshops. But you will also visit the grey parts of the industrial area.
The focus is Venezia, its lagoon and the area nearby made up of small and large enterprises. Old and new work places where culture, economy and environment mix up together.
Can we re-design economy and take into account in the same time, the needs of persons, environment and culture?
We will give you a practical example with Antica Stamperia Armena, which is re-starting its activities in the heart of Venice.
And last but not least we will analyze skills and relationships in work places.

The storm has gone: Piave river where we returned to see if actually “The storm has gone” (1). You will certainly remember the devastating flood in November 2018 and the death of millions of trees in the mountains.
In the immediate following weeks, groups of volunteers cleaned the coast of Jesolo. A group was also guided by our Ermes. After a few months we went along the Piave to check the situation. To be precise between San Biagio di Callalta and Ponte di Piave in the province of Treviso.
Apart from some minor parts, the place is clean. The fury of water can still be noticed by some details such as the piled grass and unusual objects that remain “perched” on the branches. There are some plastic objects but they are really a small part.
For the rest the landscape has a lunar aspect and in some ways looks like a labyrinth. It seems indeed that “the storm has gone” and Piave river is quiet again
Light plays strange games, just as weird objects we found in twilight. They almost seem to have become part of the natural landscape. Let’s put it in this way, Nature will always prevail on the human being …
Birkenau Block 25. Call me Lavinia but I have no longer a name, numbers instead. I live, if this can be called life, in block 25 in Birkenau. My block mates are numbers like me… We are going to die, we know. We are packed in this block, waiting, or no longer waiting, resigned, weak. It’s dark here, narrow windows, we can hardly breathe but I can still see the moon, a big moon, lightning the dark. There is something comforting in that light.
Now I am beyond the ground I am a tree, I am moon, I keep the distance from all this cruelty and sadness. I am free.
The house is silent. The wind on my branches just seems a breath of clouds on an extinguishing fire. I’m alone again. A cycle has been completed: my destiny of seed that has sprouted, the design of my ancestors. Lavinia is now earth and humus. Her spirit dancing in the evening wind (translated from the Italian version of The Inhabited Woman by Gioconda Belli)

Waiting room for the gas
Block 25 was known as “waiting room for the gas” and it was a female block. When visiting Birkenau I gave a quick glance at the block, to be honest I gave a quick glance to everything, I felt a certain burden. The most horrible and incredible feeling was perceiving a rather “normal” aspect of that place when you are outside.
There was even a beautiful sunset to highlight the “normal” aspect. And then I took the picture of the ruins of the crematory, If I hadn’t written what it was, nobody would have understood and it would have been “a beautiful landscape with moon”.
I was hit by my own picture, then the wind came and it reminded me of The Inhabited Woman and the orange tree
All of a sudden the shapeless prisoners acquired Lavinia’s shape and I realized that I was watching the very same moon that women in block 25 saw.
